In August 2019, Nasrin Husseini joined us to talk about her journey from Afghanistan to Canada. She told us her education story about how she got into veterinary school, and talked to us about what it's like to be a female in veterinary school in another country.

Nasrin Husseini grew up in Iran, escaped the Taliban and was the first woman to graduate from the veterinary school in Afghanistan after Taliban rule, finishing top of her class in 2010. Husseini came to Canada as a refugee, and has now made her way to the University of Guelph. She taught English and computer skills to women, although occasional Taliban threats led her at times to cease teaching or to remove her business sign from the door.

Her path has lead her to the University of Guelph as she is one of five people to received the inaugural Arrell Food Institute scholarship, worth $50,000, and hopes to help transform the global food industry with her research.
